PostSubject: Converting Pagemaker   Sat Jul 11, 2009 3:15 pm

I don't know if some artist encountered a hard time converting Pagemaker file into PDF but I'm having a headache! Huuh! It keeps on looking for distiller. Sometimes it converts easy but more often NOT ! Does anyone knew of some techniques to convert PMD to PDF? Or The Pagemaker has bugs that was not fixed by its developer? Help me pls.

You have to convert your PageMaker files to PostScript then drop these into a Distiller Hot Folder to convert it to PDF. But better to upgrade to InDesign CS to avoid unnecessary headaches later on.

My thoughts.

upgrade to InDesign. Adobe bought PM from aldus. InDesign can read PM files.
in the mean time . . . export the .pmd and open it on a computer with InDesign. Although I have not tried this, but theoretically this will work.

Good luck!!!

I agree with Larry. The ultimate solution really is to use InDesign. There are still a lot of layout artists who have not shifted to InDesign; because they simply got used to PageMaker. However, those who have crossed the bridge have never looked back.

InDesign is miles ahead of PageMaker; and using it is a lot more efficient than PageMaker. And this applies specially to the Output stage. PageMaker was really never equipped to handle PDF files efficiently. It's PDF handling seems to be more like patchwork solutions.

Aside from its output capabilities, InDesign is also easier to use; and offers alot more design and layout tools for th Layout Artist. sunny

Use Acrobat 7 or higher. Look at your printers, you will see an Adobe PDF printer there. Use that PDF printer as your printer in Pagemaker. You will need PPD, if you don't have correct PPD you can download it from Adobe site.

From Pagemaker, Print then choose the PDF printer, choose the right PPD (postscript or Acrobat Distiller PPDs), configure the settings by choosing from preset like Prepress or high quality printing or depending on your output intent.

TIP: Search your computer using *.ppd, you will see all the ppds inside your computer, this will also help you where to put your ppd inside your PM7 directory.

If you have lower version of Acrobat, you will need a postscript printer driver then print to file using that driver. Open your Distiller, set the settings according to your needs, and open the postscript file. distiller will then ripped your .ps file to pdf.

NOTE: Adobe PDF printer is different with PDF writer. Do not use PDF writer if your files are intended for high quality printing. Never use Export to PDF command in Pagemaker. I had no problems converting PM files to PDF. Opening PM file in Indesign is alright but you will need some reformatting and if you are new in Indesign, baka sasakit lang lalo ulo mo.

Then. next time use Indesign (hehehe).

HTH,
Alex

Thanks, Ton.

Unfortunately, August 1 lang talaga ako pwede. Nasa Manila Standard ako afternoon ng August 1 and then beer time sa gabi. I will be giving free training dun (editorial & advertising) para mag switch sila sa pdf/x workflow. Bago ang RIP nila so kailangan din baguhin ang file sending procedure.

Please beg your wife to change her birthday na lang to another date. hehehe....

Pero let's see. July 31 ng mga 11:30am ang dating ko sa Manila from Bacolod. Baka pwede tayong magkita by then pero bitbit ko pa ang bagahe ko nun.

Akala ko working na ang CTP mo.

Let's keep in touch.

Hi Sir Anton,

Of course I remember you. Good luck sa Ctp. Tamang-tama yan, plates are now cheaper.

Sir Presstech,

No problem. With Larry, I'm in good hands (double meaning, hahaha, just kidding).

All the best
Alex

Hi Sir Fred. We can meet at Kagitingan on August 1 after lunch. We can ask Randy Lumacang to inform their management. I'd rather you be there Sir Fred kasi we would also check the RIP settings. What do you think?
