PostSubject: Want to know more about Laminations   Mon Oct 22, 2007 6:51 pm

Can anyone explain me all about laminations? Like UV Lamination, spot lamination, 3D Lamination, varnised and the Grafika magazine (newsletter of PPTF) sample of their spots UVs, how, what ink used. Can it be done using an offset or a letterpress? Appreciate for your help.

Lamination and UV coating are two different processes; so the term "UV lamination" is actually a contradiction.

In lamination, a thin film is applied to the substrate (Paper or board) using adhesive. The adhesive is applied to the film with roller before attachment to the substrate. In smaller laminating machines the film already has heat curing adhesive when purchased. The film is the applied to the substrate by using heated rollers. For matte lamination, the film used has a matte finish.

In UV coating, a very heavy coating of varnish is applied to the substrate. The varnish is a ultra violet (UV) curing type so that when the varnished substrate passes through the UV curing unit, it dries fast. This prevents the substrate from sticking and produces a high gloss. The varnish can be applied with rollers, dry offset or silk screen.

The choice between lamination and UV coating will really depend on the use of the end product; because, visually, both look the same. Lamination offers more protection but is more expensive than UV.

I don't believe that you can spot laminate; because this will mean applying film on specific areas. For spot application, we use spot UV coating. The varnish is applied to specific areas using serif process or silkscreen, before the UV curing.

Many companies such as High Gloss, GVJ, and Fine Horse offer 3D effects like crack ice. You can ask them for samples.

Sorry kung hindi ako naka sagot kaagad.

Ang ink na ginagamit sa pag silkscreen ng spot UV coating ay kailangan dumaan sa UV dryer. Kaya kailangan may UV dyer or curing machine.

Ang suggestion ko ay bumili ng maliit na laminating machine. Ito ay table-top at available sa GMP Philippines.

Additional info's lang po.

I agree to presstech that a lot of people in printing industry were confuse about UV Lamination & UV Coating...the term for this is UV coating as Sir Presstech explained. B'coz lamination is compose of atleast 2 solid substrate eg. plastic & paper. so this makes the term UV lamination improper, b'coz the process is basically coating a varnish over a substrate.(Solid substrate & Liquid UV Varnish).

As to 3d Spot Coating, the base of the substrate must be matte, either Matte plastic laminated or matte paper. Then a particular image spot will be coated. The varnish used is also different form the ordinary UV coating (Full UV Coating & UV Spot Coating) they used UV Varnish and for 3D Spot coating coating. They used thicker kind of UV varnish for additional texture effect.

3D Spot Coating machine can be also used for UV Spot Coating & Full UV Coating.

UV Spot Coating can be also used for Full UV Coating

Full UV Coating can't do Spot & 3D Spot.

Plastic laminating machines can laminate Matte & Glossy, and halogram effect films
